Everything Old Is New Again

In the early 1930s, Maryland native C. Gibson Ford realized the growing need for a sealant able to hold high temperatures and pressures on turbine joints, diesel engines cylinder heads and other superheated steam pressures. Having found a product in Germany that met his basic requirements – and foreseeing the possibility of global conflict that could cut off access to the product – he founded a DC-based firm – the National Boiler Improvement Company – and commenced domestic production of a similar, but even more versatile product.

After several years of R&D, a resin was developed. In June 1937, the company name was changed to National Engineering Products, Inc. (NEPI) and soon began production of a domestically-made, high-temperature sealing compound – soon to be named and trademarked as COPALTITE.

COPALTITE has been on the Qualified Product List of the United States Navy and other U.S. Government agencies since 1934 – more than 90 years!

NEPI continues to develop high-quality sealants and fire retardants needed by industry and consumers.
